It didn’t take long to realize he had something special—a perspective we desperately needed on the network. If there’s one thing that year of listening taught me, it’s that the heaviest burdens are usually the ones carried in total silence.

That’s why I’m genuinely glad to welcome the Boomer in Recovery podcast to the Recovered Life Network.

The show is hosted by Cecil Gailey Jr., and what appeals to me about it is pretty simple: Cecil talks about mental health, addiction, and recovery from a vantage point we just don’t hear enough about—the baby boomer generation.

I think that matters.

A lot of folks from that era grew up in a world where you kept your trap shut about this stuff. You had problems? You sucked it up and handled them. You put on your boots, went to work, took care of the family, and kept moving forward. Mental health wasn’t something you sat around debating over coffee, and addiction was almost always wrapped in a thick blanket of shame.

Times have changed, sure. But there are still millions of people walking around today carrying decades of weight they never learned how to put into words. That’s precisely why Cecil’s voice belongs here.

A Different Vantage Point

On Boomer in Recovery, Cecil digs into his own mileage—the raw reality of mental health, addiction, and the winding road of getting clean. What I respect is that he speaks from right where he’s standing.

Getting sober looks pretty different at 25 than it does at 60 or 70. By the time you hit those later chapters, you’ve got a lot more history in the rearview mirror. Different relationships. Different regrets. Different wreckage to clean up. Yet, stripped down to its bones, the core question never changes: How do I keep growing and build a better life from right here, today?

That’s a human conversation worth having.

What We’re Building Here

When I set out to build the Recovered Life Network, the last thing I wanted was a chorus of people saying the exact same thing in the exact same voice. That’s not real life, and frankly, it makes for terrible listening.

I wanted a wide-open plaza of honest voices talking candidly about addiction, mental health, healing, and the messy business of reinventing yourself. Some of those voices belong to clinicians. Others belong to everyday folks with deep scars and real lived experience. Some are young; some have plenty of gray hair.

The goal is to offer a space where you can hear recovery spoken in a dialect that actually hits home for you.

That’s why having Cecil Gailey Jr. on board feels right. Give Boomer in Recovery a listen and help me welcome him to the neighborhood. I have a hunch you’re going to hear some conversations a lot of folks have been waiting a long time to catch.

Listen on Apple Podcasts

Listen on Spotify

Recovered Life Newsletter is a reader-supported publication. when life is falling apart?

It’s when life starts going well.

The relationship gets serious—and we pull away. An opportunity finally appears—and we procrastinate. Life becomes peaceful—and somehow we create chaos. Recovery is going well—and we stop doing the things that helped us get there.

Then we wonder: Why did I do that?

Sometimes self-sabotage isn’t about wanting to destroy something good. It may be about returning to what feels familiar.

If you spent years living in chaos, you can become incredibly good at surviving it. But peace, stability, intimacy, success, and happiness can feel surprisingly unfamiliar.

At some point, recovery becomes about more than stopping destructive behaviors. It becomes about learning how to live a good life—and allowing ourselves to keep it.

TONIGHT — Wednesday, September 9th

Join us for a Recovered Life conversation about why we sabotage things when they’re finally going well.

5 PM Pacific • 7 PM Central • 8 PM Eastern

We’ll talk about relationships, opportunities, fear of success, comfort with chaos, and the ways we sometimes push away the very things we say we want.

Maybe the next stage of recovery isn’t fighting what’s wrong. It is honest, direct, and sometimes uncomfortable—in the best possible way.

Each episode brings Austin face-to-face with people who have truly been through it: people recovering from addiction, survivors of overdoses, individuals who have served time in prison, and others who lost nearly everything before finding a way to rebuild their lives.

These are not stories told from a distance. They are conversations with people who lived through the chaos, consequences, and heartbreak of addiction—and discovered that their worst moment did not have to become the end of their story.

Real People. Real Consequences. Real Recovery.

Austin’s relaxed, long-form interview style gives his guests room to tell the whole story without reducing recovery to a motivational slogan.

Episodes explore experiences such as:

Addiction to alcohol, cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, opioids, and other substances

Overdose, incarceration, homelessness, relapse, and family loss

Trauma, shame, codependency, and mental health

The difficult realities of getting and staying sober

Rebuilding relationships, purpose, identity, and self-respect

The spiritual experiences and human connections that can make recovery possible

Recent guests have shared powerful stories involving long-term relapse after years of sobriety, food addiction and codependency, binge drinking, suicide loss, incarceration, and rebuilding a meaningful life after hitting bottom.

The conversations are intense, but the message underneath them is always one of possibility: people can change, lives can be rebuilt, and no one is beyond recovery.

About Austin Rampt

Austin Rampt is the author of One Last Hit, a raw memoir about his own journey through addiction, survival, and recovery.

He brings that same honesty to the podcast. Austin doesn’t approach his guests like a reporter studying addiction from the outside. He speaks as someone who understands the experience and knows how much courage it takes to tell the truth about it.

That shared understanding creates conversations that feel less like formal interviews and more like two people sitting together and talking honestly about what happened, what finally changed, and what life looks like today.

Get the Book Here

Why One Last Hit Belongs on Recovered Life

Recovered Life TV exists to amplify meaningful voices in addiction recovery, mental health, healing, and personal transformation.

As part of its distribution through the Recovered Life Network, One Last Hit brings unfiltered honesty, lived experience, and human connection to conversations about recovery—exploring not only what it takes to stop a substance or behavior, but also what it takes to rebuild a life.

By welcoming One Last Hit to the Recovered Life Network, we can help these important stories reach more people—including those who may be struggling silently and wondering whether change is still possible for them.

Sometimes hearing one person tell the truth about where they have been is enough to help someone else believe they are not alone.

We’re proud to have Austin and One Last Hit as part of the network, and we’re looking forward to sharing many more unforgettable conversations.

Listen to One Last Hit on Recovered Life TV:
onelasthit.recoveredlife.tv

Recovered Life Newsletter is a reader-supported publication. Damon questions whether the media is treating alcohol use too casually—as if returning to drinking were simply a lifestyle choice rather than a potentially serious decision for someone with a history of alcohol problems.

Drawing from more than three decades of personal recovery and his experience watching others attempt controlled drinking, Damon explores the belief that time, knowledge, and personal growth might allow someone with alcoholism to drink normally again. He explains why having to constantly monitor, limit, or manage alcohol consumption may itself be a warning sign.

Ultimately, the episode asks a difficult question: Can someone who has experienced alcoholism ever safely return to drinking? Damon shares his honest perspective while inviting listeners to examine their own beliefs about moderation, relapse, and what long-term recovery really means.
<div Frank celebrates 33 years of continuous sobriety and reflects on why the past year became one of his best—not because of a major accomplishment, but because he finally felt more comfortable being himself.

Damon discusses putting down fear, accepting that everyone has a different path to recovery, and how treatment options have changed since he got sober in 1993. Through it all, one truth has remained constant: a spiritual solution can bring hope to a problem that once felt hopeless. He also shares his gratitude for everyone who has supported him and helped Recovered Life grow into a community he never could have imagined.

Recovered Life Newsletter is a reader-supported publication.
